All AirPods models can be used via a traditional Bluetooth connection, an Apple device (preferably iPhone) is required to make optimal use of all functions. An overview of the supporting software:

  • First generation AirPods : iOS 10, macOS Sierra, tvOS 10, watchOS 3 or later
  • Second generation AirPods : iOS 12.2, macOS Mojave 10.14.4, tvOS 12.2, watchOS 5.2 or later
  • AirPods Pro : iOS 13.2, iPadOS 13.2, MacOS Catalina 10.15.1, tvOS 13.2, watchOS 6.1 or later
  • AirPods Max : iOS 14.3, iPadOS 14.3, macOS Big Sur 11.1, tvOS 14.3, watchOS 7.2 or later

Pair AirPods with an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

  • Enable Bluetooth (Settings ▸ Bluetooth)
  • Unlock your iDevice
  • Open the case of the AirPods (Pro), take the AirPods Max out of the case
  • Keep the case or Max next to your iPhone or iPad
  • The coupling panel will appear automatically
  • Tap the option ‘Connect’ and then ‘Done’

The AirPods are now connected to your iDevice. Via the control panel you can view the status of your AirPods, you can do this by tapping the triangle with the circles in the music panel. You can also consult the battery status via the battery widget or by opening the charging case ( more info ).

While connecting, the AirPods are also linked to your iCloud account. This means that all devices that are linked to this account can also use the earbuds without having to configure them manually here. Open the case next to this device or remove the Max from the Smart Case, and a connection will be established immediately.

Pair AirPods with an Apple Watch

Pair AirPods with a Mac

If you have already paired your AirPods with an iPhone or iPad, you can automatically use it on your Mac as well. Remove the AirPods from the case and click on the sound item in the control panel and choose the AirPods if they are not automatically connected. Do you still have MacOS Catalina or older?

Then click on the sound icon in the menu bar, choose the AirPods. If you do not have this icon in the menu bar, you can activate it via  ▸ System Preferences ▸ Sound ▸ tick the option ‘Show volume in menu bar’ at the bottom. If you bought the AirPods and don’t happen to have an iOS device, you can connect the Pods to your Mac using the method below.

  • Open  ▸ System Preferences
  • Navigate to ‘Bluetooth’
  • Open the AirPods case and press and hold the button on the back
  • The earphones are included in the list of Bluetooth devices
  • Click on ‘Pair’ behind the AirPods

Pair AirPods with iPhone, iPad or Mac without required software

If you have an Apple device with software that is older than the conditions, you can simply connect the earphones via Bluetooth. To activate the connection on the AirPods or AirPods Pro, it is important that you open the case and press and hold the button on the back. With this, you can establish the connection and activate the ‘search mode’. You can force manual pairing by pressing and holding the button of the AirPods Max. For an iPhone or iPad, you can then start pairing via Settings ▸ Bluetooth, for a Mac this can be done via  ▸ System Preferences ▸ Bluetooth.

  • Open Settings
  • Navigate to ‘Remotes and Devices’
  • Select ‘Bluetooth’
  • Open ‘Bluetooth’
  • Open the AirPods case and press and hold the button on the back
  • The earphones are included in the list of Bluetooth devices
  • Select it and establish the connection

Pair AirPods with other devices such as Android and Windows

Via a normal Bluetooth connection, you can also connect the AirPods to other devices that support Bluetooth. To do this, follow the steps prescribed for the respective device.
