It may happen that suddenly your iPhone camera not working or keeps crashing. When opening the Camera application, the image remains black and it is not possible to take photos or videos.
Not only the Camera app can cause problems, in apps such as Instagram, WhatsApp, FaceTime, etc. the camera can not work. In addition to the aforementioned problems, it can also happen that the Camera app cannot be opened or it has suddenly disappeared (for example after an update). We have some solutions to these problems.
Solution for iPhone camera not working
- Close apps completely
- Open the app chooser
- Close all apps by swiping them up
- Wait a few moments
- Check if the camera is working again
- Force restart
If not, it is best to force restart your iPhone using these steps.
In most cases the camera (application) will work again after a forced restart, if not, try the following. Open Settings and navigate to Screen Time ▸ Restrictions. Enable restrictions here, enter a code and remember it! Navigate to ‘Allowed Apps’ then toggle off ‘Camera’ and ‘Facetime’, restart your iPhone and toggle both options back on. Then you can turn off ‘Restrictions’ again.
Do you still have iOS 11 or earlier? Then you can find these settings via Settings ▸ General ▸ Restrictions.
iPhone camera not working
If the camera (application) still does not work after the above solutions, it is recommended to fully restore your iPhone and install it as new. You can read how to do this here.
If that does not help, the camera itself is probably broken. If you still have a warranty, you can consult Apple Support. If this is not the case, you can have the camera repaired by an authorized repairer.
