Nothing is more annoying than a slow iMac, you’ve probably already tried several things to get your old iMac back quickly. Cleaned your desktop, disabled widgets, used clean-up programs or maybe you’ve already reinstalled macOS or your entire iMac.

Why is the iMac Slow?
The reason an old iMac is slow almost always has to do with the startup disk that is in the computer. Until this year, the iMacs were standard delivered with a traditional hard disk with separate components, which in many cases immediately did not meet the speed requirements of today’s users. Certainly, the owners of a 21.5 “model (which came with a smaller and slower 2.5” hard disk) suffered from this. Add to that the years and running hours of the wear-sensitive disk and you are guaranteed a spinning beach ball as a mouse and crashing programs.
Slow hard disk out, fast SSD in.

As a result, your mouse does not always transform into a spinning beach ball, starting up is a matter of seconds and searching for cleaning programs/options is a thing of the past.
iMac with a Fusion Drive
Even if the iMac is equipped with a Fusion Drive, you can suffer a lot from the slow hard drive. This is because a Fusion Drive is actually nothing more than a traditional hard drive in combination with a small SSD that is often only 32GB in size. The operating system will then boot faster via the SSD, but the rest will run almost entirely on the slow hard drive. After an SSD upgrade, you are no longer dependent on that slow hard drive and you can fully enjoy the speed that an SSD has to offer.
